Television Without Pretty: How Transphobic Was Last Night's Cake Boss?(via @Gawker)

Trans bombshell Carmen Carrera, best known as the fourth runner-up of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3, is asking TLC’s Cake Boss to apologize after her appearance on last night’s episode.

So, Carmen knew full well that this whole appearance was meant to be a “Surprise, she’s a transwoman!” joke, and she’s upset for them making a big deal about her being formerly male (or as she says, she’s upset that they label her as currently male, she would’ve been okay if only they said that she USED to be male)? While the treatment and concept of this entire “joke” is transphobic, sickening, and offensive, Carmen should be held somewhat accountable for being irresponsible enough to agree to being a part of this in the first place!

I just want to make clear that I obviously do not agree with how she was treated in this. I’m just appalled to find out that she knew what the point of her appearance was in the first place, and still agreed to taking part without assuming that a cheesy reality show wouldn’t portray her in such a way. I had heard about this whole mess thinking that she was duped into everything, but apparently that’s not the case.

Also, to finish my Degrassi ranting…

My sister and I were watching during the Fimogen kiss, and my idiot stepsister walks by. My sister (mind you, she’s 10, but she knows I’m gay, I assume she’s not hateful to the gay thing as I’ve explained things to her before) points to the screen and says, “See? Bad influence!” I immediately turn to her and say “What the hell is that supposed to mean?!”

The other bitch, who is 23, says, “Oh, she just means because I don’t like that show, it’s a bad influence to kids.” Is she fucking stupid? She thinks the show is teaching bad things to kids apparently, as my sister brought up My Body is a Cage, and I explained to her Adam’s situation being transgender, and she said that that episode would teach kids to burn themselves. I told her that wasn’t the point, the show was made to explain to people that don’t know what being transgender means and also shows how LGBT kids self-harm because they have no other outlet for their pain, depression, etc. I think she got it.

Now I just need to focus on getting her away from our stepsister, because she’s clearly the bad influence. -_-
