Marisol Lewis: Degrassi’s Public Enemy Number One

Seriously, I don’t think there’s ever been a character as universally hated as her. Paige and Holly J were bitches that eventually softened, but were still lovable in their ways of being bitches. Rick was an abuser, that eventually became a tragic and relatable character when he was bullied by everyone at school. Lucas, Jay, Johnny, Bruce, Spinner, Owen, Alex, Bianca… All bullies, that usually had some sort of explanation for why they treated other people like shit.

All of these characters have something in common: They once were hated, but were later redeemed in the eyes of the viewers for either something they did (Lucas trying to step up with Isabella and standing up for Jane, Johnny trying to make a better life for himself) or something done to them (Paige was raped, Holly J’s financial ruin and near shooting, Rick was bullied and killed at the hands of his own gun, Bianca is nearly raped and abused on a daily basis, Alex’s entire home situation, etc.). We got to see that these characters had shitty lives, and their negative qualities that they exhibited towards others were explained or rationalized.

Marisol is just an epic cunt. She has ZERO positive qualities. She’s exhibited a liking to being stupid to impress a boy (KC and Drew), she’s dated a guy who had a girlfriend AND a baby (KC, again), she’s terribly rude and hateful to people aren’t “normal” in her view (Adam, Mo, even Katie), has NO class with how she handled the election debate, and on and on.

She’s the most irredeemable character in Degrassi history. If history has taught us anything, it’s that if Marisol continues as a major character in the remainder of season 11 and season 12, she’s gonna have something very bad likely happen to her in order for viewers to care about her. At this point, I don’t think anyone’s going to be crying any tears if she ends up getting hit by a car or something.
